What coverage does Belsura car insurance offer?

Liability insurance

The liability insurance is required by law. It covers damage that you cause to third parties with your car: other people, other vehicles, buildings or the environment.

Examples:

  • You cause a rear-end collision. The costs for repairing the other person's car are covered.
  • An accident causes oil to spill into a nearby pond. Covered are the costs for cleaning the pond.

The insurance is also there to defend you from unjustified claims. Therefore, we also take over the "disputes" with third parties for you.

Deductible: Freely selectable, CHF 0.– recommended.

The deductible is the amount in CHF that you pay per claim. Your insurance will pay for costs that exceed your deductible.

Example: For a claim of CHF 3‘000 and a deductible of CHF 500, your insurance pays CHF 2‘500.

Recommendation from Belsura: All cars (mandatory).

Partially comprehensive insurance

The partially comprehensive insurance covers damage to your own car. It does not cover damage for which you are responsible or damage caused by a collision (exception: collision with animals or glass damage to the front, rear or side windows - these are covered).

Common causes of covered claims:

  • Glass breakage of the front, rear or side windows
  • Thunderstorms, for example due to fire, hail or flooding
  • Animals, for example as a result of collisions with wild animals such as deer or wild boar
  • Marten bites (cable damage)
  • Theft or robbery

Example: The rear of the car is damaged due to a collision with a wild boar. Belsura covers the full costs (minus any deductible).

Deductible: freely selectable, CHF 0.- recommended

  • With the option "free garage choice" the deductible is always CHF 0.- (Note: With this coverage you can freely choose the garage without increasing your deductible. Without this coverage, the Belsura network with various partner garages is available to you).
  • In case of glass breakage: If the car is repaired at Carglass or Repanet, the deductible is always CHF 0.

Recommendation of Belsura: All cars with a considerable value (also older vehicles).

Fully comprehensive insurance

The fully comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car for which you are responsible and which is caused by collisions (called collision insurance, but colloquially referred to as comprehensive insurance).
A self-inflicted accident can lead to a total loss. This is covered by the fully comprehensive insurance. The comprehensive insurance always includes the partial cover.

Example: You hit someone else's car. For the damage to the other car you need the liability insurance, for the damage to your own car you need the fully comprehensive insurance. If the damage to the other car is CHF 3'000 and the damage to your own car is CHF 5'000, and your deductible is CHF 0 (for liability and fully comprehensive) - then the full CHF 8'000 will be covered by Belsura.

Deductible: freely selectable, min. CHF 500.-

Recommendation from Belsura: Newer cars.

Note: In case of leasing, fully comprehensive insurance is mandatory.

  • If the option "free garage choice" is insured, the deductible is always CHF 0. (Note: With this coverage you can freely choose the garage without increasing your deductible. Without this coverage, the Belsura network with various partner garages is at your disposal).
  • In case of glass breakage: If the car is repaired at Carglass or Repanet, the deductible is always CHF 0.

Personal belongings

Carried items are items carried by the (co-)driver(s) for personal use, which are in the car or which you are carrying when the claim occurs.

This therefore covers damage to items carried in the car caused by Theft or accident, provided that the car was fully locked.

Example:

  • The suitcase is stolen from the parked car.
  • An accident soils a worn garment.

Certain items, such as banknotes, securities, precious metals, jewelry and hardware/software, are not covered.

Deductible: CHF 0.-

Recommendation from Belsura: Depending on the value of the personal items carried

Gross negligence

Normally, there is no coverage if you cause a claim by gross negligence (respectively: your benefit can be reduced according to the law). With this option, you extend your coverage to cases in which you act with gross negligence. With the gross negligence protection, we do not assert our statutory right to reduce benefits or recourse (reclaim of money paid).

Note: An action is generally considered "grossly negligent" if it could have been prevented by obvious or simple behavior - respectively, if one violates his duty of care.

Example: Anyone who drives into an intersection while the light is red is acting with gross negligence.

No additional deductible (deductible of comprehensive or liability will be deducted - if you have a deductible with comprehensive or liability, it will apply; otherwise the deductible is CHF 0.-).
Belsura's recommendation: We recommend the gross negligence protection, because otherwise, in the event of a claim, you may have to prove that you did not act with gross negligence - which can be very difficult.

Glass Plus

With Glas Plus, you receive coverage for damage to your headlight glass. Materials that serve as glass substitutes, incandescent lamps and LEDs are also covered.

Example: While driving on the highway, a stone breaks the headlight.

No additional deductible

Recommendation from Belsura: Newer cars

Value supplement

The current value is the value that a car would have on the market at the time of the accident (without damage). This means: For what amount could you have resold your car? With every kilometer driven, the current value reduces a bit.

The current value is the value we usually reimburse in the event of a claim - unless you have chosen the Value Supplement option: Then we pay more.

This is because the current market value supplement prevents a pure valuation based on current market value. Instead of the current market value, a different scale is applied in the event of a claim, which provides an increased value. In the operating years 1-2, 100 % of the new value is compensated, after which a gradation takes place as follows:

1st operating year 100 %
2nd operating year 100 % - 90 %
3rd operating year 90 % - 80 %
4th operating year 80 % - 70 %
5th operating year 70 % - 60 %
6th operating year 60 % - 50 %
7th operating year 50 % - 40 %
From 8th operating year Current value plus 10% of it

Example: The original cost of a car was CHF 50,000.-. After 3 years - at the time of the accident - the current value is CHF 35'000.-. The repair would cost CHF 40,000. This is a total loss and you will receive CHF 35'000.-. If you would have had a current value coverage, 80% of CHF 50'000 would still be insured after 3 years, which is above the CHF 35'000 (namely at 40'000). Thus, there would not be a total loss.

Especially in the case of old cars, the current value can quickly be lower than the repair costs. In this case, the vehicle is a total loss, even though only a comparatively "minor repair" would be necessary.

No additional deductible

Recommendation from Belsura: Always for newer and leased vehicles.

Personal accident insurance

If the occupants of your car are injured or killed in an accident, the injured party receives an individually definable sum or a daily allowance depending on the claim – death, disability or incapacity for work. This can cover part of the loss of wages or costs for doctors, hospitals, cures, prostheses, etc.

This coverage is a private supplementary insurance to existing accident and social insurances, which takes effect where gaps exist. This means that all passengers are covered in the best possible way in the event of damage to health.

No deductible

Recommendation from Belsura: If you or your passengers do not have accident insurance.

Free garage choice

In the event of a claim, this option allows your car to be repaired at the garage of your choice without an increased deductible. Without this coverage, you can use the partner garages of Belsura.

(No deductible)

Belsura recommendation: According to preference

Parking damage

This covers damage to the car caused by third parties when parked and locked. Willful or malicious damage by third parties is also insured.

Example: When you return to your parked car, you notice a scratch on the door. You are covered up to the sum insured for this damage.

A maximum of two claims will be paid per calendar year.

No deductible

Recommendation from Belsura: Newer cars

Roadside Assistance

With this coverage, you receive comprehensive services in the event of a claim in Switzerland as well as in whole Europe and the countries bordering the Mediterranean.

Key coverages include:

  • Towing and repair
  • Salvage
  • Assumption of additional costs for continuation of the journey incl. rental car if necessary
  • Retrieval of the car
  • Customs fees

No deductible
Recommendation from Belsura: If you travel abroad within Europe.

General questions

Why does Belsura offer a better price performance ratio than other suppliers?

It’s simple: other providers invest a lot of money in huge station posters and fancy TV commercials – and they have to recoup these costs through higher premiums. We, on the other hand, do without, thus recording hardly any expenses and are thus in a position to offer more favorable insurance solutions.

How can I be sure that a little-known provider like Belsura is really performing?

The insurer/risk carrier of Belsura is Great Lakes Insurance SE (GLISE is a 100% subsidiary of the reinsurance company Munich RE) and guarantees the benefits of the Belsura and an exclusive recommendation by AutoScout24 and FinanceScout24 is, of course, an additional first-class seal of approval.

What are the requirements to apply for Belsura car insurance?

  • The person who drives the car most often must be at least 20 years old and have had a driver’s license for at least 2 years.
  • Currently living in Switzerland.
  • A valid mobile number needs to be provided.
  • If you change your insurance, please take into account the cancellation period of your previous insurer.

How do I apply for Belsura car insurance?

You’re only three steps away from your Belsura insurance:

  1. Calculate your premium on belsura.ch and receive our offer directly online.
  2. Conclude the insurance by clicking on “”conclude now””. You have now concluded the policy in a legally valid way and you do not have to sign anything else.
  3. Register your car with the vehicle registration office in your canton of residence, i.e. have the insurance registered or transferred in your vehicle permit. From now on, your insurance coverage is guaranteed.

Once you have completed these three steps, the insurance becomes legally binding. Even if you are only changing your insurance, you need to transfer your car at the road traffic department, as the insurance can only come into effect at that time, in accordance with the Swiss Federal Road Traffic Act (the liability insurance for your car is mandatory in Switzerland).

Which vehicles can I insure with Belsura?

You can insure passenger cars and small minivans or vans with us. Example: family car, station wagon, hybrid, convertible, limousine, as long as their weight does not exceed 3.5 tons and they can be found in the digital application process.

You can’t insure cars that are over 25 years old at the time of the calculation of the offer.

You can still insure certain models declared as commercial vehicles by the manufacturers. To find out if your type of vehicle can be insured with us, check the premium calculator’s selection list.

Is it possible to insure driving school cars or cabs with Belsura?

No, we do not have that option at this time.

Do I get a discount on my premium if I take a road safety course?

No, there is no discount for that. At Belsura you always start at the lowest bonus level, that’s why we don’t have the possibility to give other discounts.

I need my car for private use and now also for business. Do I have to adapt my insurance?

Yes, please inform us by e-mail about the change and the branch you work in.

Before you get your Belsura insurance

When can I cancel my current insurance and change?

Depending on the regular cancellation period of your previous insurer, you can cancel your existing insurance. You will find the conditions in the policy or in the general terms and conditions of insurance (GTC). Usually, the cancellation period is three months after the end of the annual contract period. If you do not cancel, the contract is usually extended for one year. However, there are sometimes multi-year contracts that cannot be terminated or contracts that can be terminated within a shorter period.

You can also cancel your insurance during the year in the following cases:

  • Change of vehicle
You can cancel your insurance for your old car if you replace it with a new one. You must inform the old insurer in time for the contract to be cancelled and the prepaid premium refunded. If your car has been totally damaged, the premium cannot be refunded. You have just collected your new car from your previous insurer and you want to switch to Belsura? No problem, you can terminate the contract with your previous insurer within 14 days after collection.

  • Change in premiums
If your current insurance increases the premium, changes the deductible or reduces the benefits, you can cancel your contract for the date on which the change takes effect. Your cancellation must be received by the insurance company before the change takes effect.

  • Owner of car changes
When the owner of the car changes, the comprehensive insurance lapses and the liability insurance is transferred to the new owner. The liability insurance can be cancelled by the new owner within 14 days of the transfer. The old liability insurance only expires once the new insurance is recorded in the registration certificate.
If the owner of the car changes within the family, some insurances do not recognize the change as a reason for cancellation.

  • In the event of a disaster
You can cancel your insurance if the insurance company pays out a claim. The time limits are set out in the general terms and conditions of contract (GTC). The insurance company’s liability expires 14 days after receipt of the notice of termination. If the contract has been in force for more than one year and the loss is not a total loss, the annual premium paid in advance will be refunded on a pro rata basis.

Does Belsura offer a cancellation service?

We would love to, but most insurances require a personally signed cancellation by the policyholder, which is why we cannot handle the cancellation process for you.

We will be happy to help you terminate your contract. We have prepared a termination letter for you – just fill it in with some information and send it to your prior insurance company.

Insurance coverage

Where can I find detailed information on the different coverages?

Detailed information on basic coverage, supplementary coverage and contractual conditions can be found in our GTC. General Terms and Conditions of Insurance (GTCI). Please read this document before concluding the contract. In case of doubt, please contact our Contact our support.

Should I expect an increase in the premium the following year?

We always want to offer you the best price-performance ratio. That’s why we are not applying any categorical premium increases for the following years.

Can I select the Bonus Protection option for my car insurance?

At Belsura, there is no bonus-malus system. That’s why you can’t choose a bonus protection option with us either. With us, you are always at the lowest bonus level. In addition, all Belsura policies include premium protection, so you don’t have to worry about a premium increase after the first claim.

If I lend my car to a friend, is it insured?

If you have given your friend permission to use the car, she is also insured. In the premium calculator, you can indicate whether people under 25 years of age also use your car. Please enter the correct data here, so that we do not have to reduce the benefit in the event of a claim. Please note that the agreed deductible is increased by CHF 1,000 for drivers aged below 25 and young drivers in the case of liability and comprehensive events. The deductible for the partially comprehensive insurance does not increase.

Can I insure multiple vehicles with interchangeable plates with Belsura?

Currently, we do not offer this option.

Are trailers covered by insurance?

Trailers are only included in the liability insurance, not in the comprehensive insurance. If you want the trailer to be included in the comprehensive insurance, you can contact us.

Questions about the premium calculator

I already got my driver's licence before I turned 18. What information do I need to provide?

If you obtained your driver’s licence before the age of 18, you must pay the date of acquisition of the driver’s license as if it were after your 18th birthday. If you want to take out the insurance, you can tell us the correct date so that we can enter it correctly in the policy.

My car is not in the selection list of the premium calculator. What information do I need to provide?

If the make and model of your car are available in the premium calculator and you cannot find the specific model type, you can choose another type of the same model. It must have the same power (HP) and a similar new price as your car.

If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to contact our support.

How much time do I have to make use of the calculated quote?

You have 30 days to apply. After this time, you will have to request a new quote to purchase Belsura car insurance.

I won't need the insurance until a later date. Can I calculate the quote anyway?

Yes, you can – as long as the desired start date of the insurance is no more than 5 months after the calculation date of the quote.

Registration of your car

What if I don't know the car's registration number yet, but it is requested in the additional questions?

If the registration number is not known, for example because you have an imported vehicle, you can use the chassis number. Our support will be happy to help you.

How do I tell my DMV about the insurance change?

We automatically send the electronic insurance certificate to all the road traffic departments in your canton. You can then either send your existing driving licence by post to the road traffic department – which you should do about four to five days before the insurance starts – or you can go to the motor vehicle department in person.
If you choose to send your application by mail, you must attach a note to the vehicle permit indicating the date of the insurance change. The road traffic department will send you the new permit within a week.

When choosing the start date of the insurance, please take into account public holidays, as the registration certificate must be submitted to the road traffic department before the holiday. In this case, Belsura recommends to start the insurance a few days before. In any case, you should avoid a period without insurance.

How do I register a new or a used car?

In general, we send the electronic insurance certificate to the road traffic departments of your canton. As soon as the road traffic department has received your driving licence, the car is registered. Your insurance will take effect on the date of collection by the road traffic department. For new cars, the registration is usually done by your car dealer.

Please prepare the following documents for the registration:

  • Original registration certificate of the old car (if you have an old car)
  • A vehicle permit for used cars or an appraisal report using form 13.20A for new cars. Most of the time, the form is filled out by your car dealer.

The road traffic department will send you the new permit within a week.

Contractual conditions

When does the insurance start?

It depends on whether you registered your car before or after the chosen start date. In the first case, the chosen start date of insurance applies, in the second case, the date of registration.

Where is my Belsura car insurance valid?

In accordance with the scope of the “International Insurance Card”, your Belsura insurance is valid in Europe and in the countries bordering the Mediterranean. The coverage for accidental damage and passenger accidents as well as the breakdown service are also valid in Kosovo.

Who is my contractual partner?

TONI Digital Insurance Solutions AG acts as a tied insurance intermediary for the insurance companies listed below.

Great Lakes Insurance SE, Munich, Cham Branch
Insurer of third party liability, partial cover and collision insurance. Great Lakes Insurance is a subsidiary of the Munich Re Group (one of the world’s leading reinsurers of various insurance products) and an insurer of third-party liability, partial cover and collision insurance.

TAS Assurances SA
Insurer for the breakdown service (assistance insurance)

Assista Legal Protection Ltd.
Insurer for the legal protection of vehicles

When does Belsura send the insurance documents?

As soon as we receive the confirmation of the collection from the road traffic department, we send you your policy and the “international insurance card” electronically. Usually, you will receive your invoice once a year. In some cases, it can take up to four weeks before we can send you the documents, as we are dependent on the Swiss road traffic authorities for this.

Can I print my own "International Insurance Card"?

Since July 1, 2020, you can print the “green insurance card”, now “international insurance card”, on white paper yourself – it is no longer necessary to use green paper.

What are the cancellation periods for Belsura car insurance?

Your policy is valid for one year from the beginning of the insurance and is automatically renewed for another year. However, you can terminate your policy with Belsura at any time by the end of a month, even during the term of the contract. You can also cancel the contract in the following cases:

  • New car
You can cancel your insurance for the old car if you replace it with a new one. You have to inform us in time so that the contract can be cancelled and the prepaid premium refunded. If your car has suffered total damage, the premium cannot be refunded.

  • Change in premiums
If Belsura increases the premium, changes the deductible or reduces the benefits, you can terminate your contract with effect from the date on which the adjustment takes effect. Your termination must be received by us before the change takes effect.

  • Support: change inside
When the owner of the car changes, the comprehensive insurance lapses and the liability insurance is transferred to the new owner. The liability insurance can be cancelled by the new owner within 14 days of the transfer. Only when the new insurance is registered in the registration certificate, the old liability insurance expires.

In the event of an accident

Where can I get my car repaired if I have a claim?

That depends on whether you have included the “free choice of garage” or not. If so, you can choose your garage freely. If not, you can rely on Belsura’s garage network.

What to do in case of a claim?

You report the damage immediately online or by phone at +41 43 543 81 80. In the event of a breakdown, you can call the same number.

Caution: Never sign third-party requests or documents written in a foreign language!
